GENERAL COMMENT

The market remains quite active, especially for large bulk carriers. Yards continously trying to push up prices and certainly with a great deal of success. The magic usd 100 million barrier for a VLCC may be close.

CHARTERING - Handy

The rally in the Atlantic continued into this week. Rates are firming across most trades. USG to Cont is now paying in excess of Usd 32k while trips fm Cont toChina are paying ard 22-23k. It seems charterers are in the market to cover bfore Christmas holidays and ows are able to fix early Jan stems at same rate. In the Feast it started off at a softer note with less fresh requirements in the mrkt. Coal cgos via Indo to Sth China are still fixing in region of Usd low 20k while the quite active short period market still able to fetch ard 13-14k bss delivery North China. ECI tonnage remains tight and vsls are rating ard Usd 15k for trips back to China.

CHARTERING - Panamax

Optimism carried over from last week in both hemispheres. The week started easy with little fixing on Monday as charterers were reluctant to fix owners optimistic asking numbers. But it turns out that owners have the upper hand and rates are rising. USG is the biggest driver in the Atlantic, where both coal and grain shipments are very active. An Atlantic round is now paying just above 20000 and fronthaul is paying around 28000. The Pacific market is strong and rising as well. We see a lot of coal moving from Indoneasia and Australia, this has pushed the pacific round voyage up to around usd 15000. The period market has been active over the last week. A panamax with far east delivery can now get around usd 13500 for a year.

CHARTERING - Capesize

Exciting times for the big ships as in particular iron ore miners struggle to cover their needs for pre-Christmas loaders ex West Australia and early 2014-stems from Brazil. For ppt slots, as high as usd 16 pmt has been paid on the Dampier/Qingdao route - up a nominal 25% (and much more in terms of daily tc-return) w-o-w. Similarly, the Tubarao/Qingdao conference route has climbed a nominal 15% w-o-w, coming in at a strong usd 30 pmt. With charterers screaming for early units across the board, average spot earning are up 27% to usd 37k. Paper has followed suit, with a resultant usd 23500 done for 4-7 months perios on prompt 180000 dwt, also similar tonnage reportedly done for forward (february) delivery at usd 20500.
