Japan Ship Exporter’s Association (JSEA) revealed on August 8 that Japanese shipbuilders contracted a total of 35 newbuildings of 1.15m gt for export in July, which saw an increase by two times against the previous month in GT terms.
Orders contracted in July surpasses newbuildings delivered during the same month.
During January-July period, Japan won a total of 201 vessels of a combined 8.19m gt, already exceeded 2012's overall 177 vessels of a combined 8.12m gt.
Those contracted for export last month are 32 bulkers (20 handysizes, six handymaxes, two panamaxes and four capesizes), two containerships and one product carrier.
Of total of 35 vessels, 19 vessels are ordered by overseas shipowner while foreign currency denominated contracts take 84%, yen-denominated deals account for 7% and yen-and-foreign currency denominated ones for 9%.
Meanwhile, overall 24 vessels of 1.1m gt went through customs, which represents delivery. In the first seven months of this year, a total of 190 vessels of a combined 8.52m gt got clearance, down by 23% year-on-year.
As of the end of July, orderbook for export ships stood at 583 vessels of 25.68m gt or 11.8m cgt - 215 vessels of 9.87m gt for delivery in 2013, 236 vessels of 10.36m gt for 2014, 110 vessels of 4.36m gt for 2015 and 22 vessels of 1.09m gt for 2016.
