The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of Korea announced that the governmental department had a groundbreaking ceremony of the world's first 'Test and Certification Center for Green Ship Equipment' at the site of Kunsan National University in the second national industrial complex located in Gunsan, North Jeolla Province, Korea.
Sponsored by the ministry's research and development fund, North Jeolla Province and Gunsan city, this project is carried out by the Korean Register of Shipping (KR). KR is planning to put a total of KRW 30bn ($27m) into the project by 2015, intending to establish a foundation of test and certification for technologies of high efficiency, eco-friendly vessel.
The groundbreaking ceremony was for test facilities and equipment and the construction will begin in this July to complete at the end of February, 2014. KR and Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute (KOMERI) jointly cooperated on this project, focusing on promoting attraction of enterprises and allied industries through research and development with the nation's attracting activities for R&D in Green Ship sector.
The ministry decided to develop the center into a global hub of Green Ship in the medium to long term, planning to carry forward a scheme to make its in-house developed Green Ship qualification system an international standard model. Also, the department plans to form a private-government cooperation belt to promote the center's growth in the medium to longer term.
