H1 NB orders rise 40%

Global shipbuilding industry's new order intakes recorded in the first half of 2013 increased by around 40% year-on-year, while Korean shipbuilders' order intakes expanded by around 60%.


According to Clarkson's latest statistics, a total of 16.66m cgt (749 vessels) were contracted in the first half of 2013, up by 40% y-o-y from 11.94m cgt (704 vessels).


Particularly, orders for commercial ships, such as containership, bulker, etc., have greatly grown comparing with H1 2012.


Korean shipyards won overall 184 vessels of 5.99m cgt, accounting for 36% of global order intakes in terms of cgt, during the same period, which saw a big growth by 61% from 119 vessels of 3.73m cgt in H1 2012. In terms of dwt, Koreans contracted 16.61m dwt, comparing with 7.77m dwt from the same period a year ago.


In terms of value, Koreans saw increase only remained at 23%, during the same period, from $15.05bn to $18.486bn. It seems that newbuilding prices hit bottom during H1 2013 have caused slow increase in contract values. Global shipowners are aggressively ordering for newbuildings judging that this is the right time to make an investment.


Meanwhile, Chinese shipyards contracted 6.57m cgt (347 vessels) during the first half of this year, accounting for 39.5% of global order intakes, up by 72% from 3.83m cgt (263 vessels) year-on-year.
