New orders contracted in March 2013 in global shipbuilding industry were reported to be a combined 2.49m cgt, up by 30% against 1.93m cgt of the previous month and more than 2.1m cgt of January, marking the largest monthly new orders, year-to-date.
According to new order intakes by country, reported by Clarkson, Korean shipbuilding industry won a combined 1.09m cgt in March, greatly outpacing its competitor, China, which won 680,000 cgt. As for newbuilding market share, Korea took 44%, far higher than 27.4% of China while Japan accounted for 19.4%, winning a combined 470,000 cgt last month.
Meanwhile, new order intakes in the first quarter of 2013 were reported to be a combined 6.6m cgt, showing a rise by 14% from 5.8m cgt of the same time period last year.
As ship prices of recent newbuilding market hit the bottom and are widely believed to show an increasing trend from now on, shipowners are actively moving to place orders to secure new eco-friendly and high-efficiently designed vessels for competitive prices.
